The Brewery & Beer
Since we had decided to brew in the British style, it made a lot of sense to commission our brewery from a UK manufacturer.
After a strong recommendation from the folks at Kelham Island Brewery in Sheffield, we contacted Mr. Vincent Johnson of Johnson Brewing Design.
This guy knows a lot about beer and brewing, and once you can understand him (through that thick Northern accent), he is a mine of information.
The 6 UK barrel brewery was manufactured in Bury, Lancashire (home of black pudding) in 2012 and Big V himself ventured over late in the year to weld in all the pipework and commission the brewery.
Hence, the first brew was called “Big V Amber” which is now a staple at Freewheel.
ABOUT CASK CONDITIONED ALES
The beers we make at the Freewheel Brewing Company are brewed with the same ingredients and methods as our partner breweries in England. Most of our beer is cask-conditioned or real ale.
Real Ale is beer brewed from traditional ingredients, matured by secondary fermentation in the container from which it is dispensed, and served without the use of extraneous carbon dioxide.
In other words, cask-conditioning is a traditional method of preparing beer for serving. The carbonation is naturally produced in a serving cask resulting in a softer mouth-feel and very balanced flavors. We believe Bay Area beer lovers will appreciate this unique and traditional
method. Below are just some of our selections. Cheers!
Our Kitchen uses locally sourced ingredients, prepared by our chef into some great pub classics with a Californian twist. In addition to our regular menu, we have daily specials, which you can check out above.
Our kitchen is open weekdays from 11:30am to 2:30pm for lunch and 4:00pm to 9:00pm weekdays and 11:30am to 00.00 Saturdays. Sundays TBA
We have snacks available when the kitchen is closed.
Our Taproom is a great place to hang out and try our hand crafted ales, poured from our tradition hand pulled beer engines and brewed in our purpose built English Brewery.
Our aim is to be a neighborhood local, where friends and family can meet over a beer and a bite to eat. We typically have up to 6 cask beers on tap plus a couple of guest beers. Add some wine from local wineries and we have you covered. Our staff will be more than happy to give you the low down on how we brew our beer and the different styles we pour. Don’t be shy to ask and if you need to know more, see if one of our brewers is available to show you around the brewery.
We have a weekly pub quiz to exercise the grey matter, plus regular music evenings. And if you enjoy your sport with a good pint in your hand, we can do that too.
And if you feel (as you should), that the local is the best place to celebrate something special, then you can arrange to reserve either part of the taproom or the whole premises and even ask the kitchen to prepare a custom menu. Ask Devin (Contact Details here) for more details.
